How much does a CPAP machine cost? 

CPAP machines range in price from approximately $1200 to $2500 dollars.  Prices vary depending on the various makes, model and options available. Most extended health care companies cover the majority of the cost of purchasing a CPAP machine.  Extended health care coverage will vary depending on your specific plan. 

 

How long will it take to get used to CPAP?

Most people adjust to CPAP in 1 to 2 weeks. Occasionally it may take a little longer if, for example, you are very sensitive to noise or the feel of the mask on your face.

 

How soon after I start using CPAP will it be before I notice an improvement?

You should notice an immediate improvement when you start CPAP treatment however some people may take up to a week or two.

 

Will my blood pressure improve after I start CPAP?

In many cases, but do not alter your medication without consulting your doctor.

 

Is it easier to lose weight when using CPAP?

It may be. You will find that your energy levels will increase and you will feel motivated to take part in many activities that your previous sleepiness has prevented you from doing.

 

Will I ever be able to stop using CPAP? Will I ever be cured of my snoring and sleep apnea?

OSA is a long-term condition. CPAP will effectively control sleep apnea as long as you continue to use it.

 

What effect will CPAP have on my ability to travel?

If you are traveling to a country with a line voltage different than the one you are currently using, a different power cord or an international plug adapter may be required to make your power cord compatible. Your CPAP machine can also be used with both AC and DC currents.  A DC adapter cord is available for use in RV’s and 12-volt adapters. Contact Coastal Sleep for more information.

 

What measures are taken to ensure that CPAP is the right treatment for me?

For most patients, improved daytime energy is proof enough. But from a medical standpoint, overnight oximetry tests are done repeatedly to ensure your heart rate and oxygen levels are within normal ranges and that your pressure settings are appropriate. Your Coastal Sleep provider will work closely with you to ensure your optimal treatment success. In some cases, a full polysomnography test is preformed in a Sleep Laboratory.

 

What if I try CPAP and decide that I don’t want to use it?

Coastal Sleep Systems provides a two month free trial for all first time patients.  Like many other treatments, it may not be right for all patients.  You have no obligation to buy. Our respiratory therapists will gladly discuss with you the various other options available to you that may be prescribed by a physician.

 

What kind of follow-up will I have once I am on CPAP?

Our Sleep Apnea program includes regular 3-month and 6-month visits for machine maintenance and mask replacement.  Machine maintenance is beneficial in prolonging the life of you CPAP machine.  Masks may need replacing every 6 months to a year depending on their use. 

What happens if I breathe through my mouth when I am on CPAP?

By breathing through your mouth you are losing the necessary pressure to keep your airway open while you are asleep.  For this reason chinstraps are available with good success. Oral masks and full-face masks are also available.

 

Does my CPAP have any special features?

There are numerous CPAP machines with various options and features.  Many machines have variable pressure ramping options to allow you to go to sleep on a lower pressure.  Some machines have variable pressures to help make exhaling through the nasal mask easier.  BiPAP and Auto-CPAP machines are also available.  Your Respiratory Therapist will be happy to explain the special features of each machine.
